n Donald Trump's absence from the Republican presidential debate on Thursday, his rivals chided the billionaire front-runner for skipping the event and holding a competing fund-raiser for veterans across town in Des Moines, Iowa.
Fox News Chairman Roger Ailes had three phone conversations with Trump on the day of the debate, according to a network spokesperson. But the two failed to resolve a simmering feud that broke into the open this week after Trump demanded that the network remove anchor Megyn Kelly as a debate moderator.

Trump at one point, according to the network, offered to appear at the debate if Fox contributed $5 million to his charities. Fox said it refused.

As you may have heard by now, New York Times columnist, Nobel Prize-winning economist and Salon mainstay Paul Krugman is earning himself a reputation of sorts as a Bernie Sanders skeptic.
His latest column is the most sustained critique of the Vermont senator’s presidential campaign we’ve seen from him yet, it’s true. But Krugman’s been looking askance at Sanders’ campaign for a while now, and his gripe — that Sanders’ campaign promises are unrealistic on both political and policy grounds —  has been consistent throughout.
As you might imagine, though, many left-wing tweeters couldn’t care less about Krugman’s earnestness. They think he’s just another elite wagon-circler. They’re pissed:

Donald Trump -- Conservative Movement Shouldn't Support Him:

Trump’s political opinions have wobbled all over the lot. The real-estate mogul and reality-TV star has supported abortion, gun control, single-payer health care à la Canada, and punitive taxes on the wealthy. (He and Bernie Sanders have shared more than funky outer-borough accents.) Since declaring his candidacy he has taken a more conservative line, yet there are great gaping holes in it.

Businesses don’t just use temp staffing agencies to add workers for short periods when they need extra hands. Staffing agencies can also serve the valuable (to crappy employers) purpose of dodging responsibility. “That person may work in our business on our terms, but the staffing agency is their employer, so we’re not responsible for violating labor laws to exploit them,” is how the dodge basically goes. Now, the Department of Labor is taking steps against that, issuing guidelines on when the company using the staffing agency to hire temp workers should be considered a joint employer that’s responsible for the people working in its facilities.
“I think the majority of noncompliance that we see is people just not getting what the law is, and what their responsibilities are under it,” [Department of Labor Wage and Hour Division director David] Weil said in an interview. “We also find cases of people who are clearly playing games, and clearly trying to shift out responsibility, and often have structured things in a way that lead towards more noncompliance.”

A Shell flag flies outside the RDS headquarters in The Hague, Netherlands
Royal Dutch Shell (RDS) warned shareholders on Wednesday to brace for a steep drop in profits for the last quarter of 2015 as plunging oil prices left a big dent in the company's bottom line.
The Anglo-Dutch energy giant said it expected fourth-quarter earnings to come in at $1.6-1.9 billion (1.5-1.7 billon euros), or some 40 percent lower than the same period a year before. Full-year earnings were estimated to total $10.4-10.7 billion, or 45 percent below 2014 levels.
'Please' despite pain
Despite the painful figures, CEO Ben van Beurden said he was "pleased with Shell's operating performance in 2015, and the momentum in the company to reduce costs and to improve competitiveness."

US Navy deploys first ‘Great Green Fleet’ ships partly powered by biofuel — RT USA:

The US Navy is launching the first ships of its ‘Great Green Fleet,’ which is so named because it will by partly powered by renewable fossil fuel alternatives. The launch, however, comes at a time when oil prices are dropping to historic lows.
The Wednesday deployment of the carrier group is taking place in Coronado, California and will be attended by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack.
The launch of the next-generation ships is the first step in the Navy building its “Great Green Fleet,” a flotilla that is powered by renewable biofuels and using energy conservation measures. However, the carrier strike group being deployed Wednesday is only powered by a mix of 90 percent petroleum and 10 percent biofuel, even though the Navy originally aimed for a 50/50 ratio.
Secretary Mabus told Reuters that the Navy has cut its oil use by 15 percent since he took office in 2009, and that the Marine Corps has reduced its consumption by 60 percent. He argues that a focus on energy-saving technology gives advantages to the Navy beyond reducing its carbon footprint.
"In 2010, we were losing too many Marines in convoys carrying fossil fuels to outposts in Afghanistan, and the prohibitive cost of oil was requiring us to stop training at home in order to keep steaming abroad, a dangerous and unsustainable scenario," Mabus said in a statement.
The Navy plans to have its fleets powered by at least 50 percent biofuel by 2020 so that fuel can’t be strategically withheld by foreign suppliers in the event of a conflict. Reducing decencies on foreign oil is a national security strategy being undertaken by all branches of the US military.

Health Reform Realities - The New York Times:

First, like it or not, incumbent players have a lot of power. Private insurers played a major part in killing health reform in the early 1990s, so this time around reformers went for a system that preserved their role and gave them plenty of new business.
Second, single-payer would require a lot of additional tax revenue — and we would be talking about taxes on the middle class, not just the wealthy. It’s true that higher taxes would be offset by a sharp reduction or even elimination of private insurance premiums, but it would be difficult to make that case to the broad public, especially given the chorus of misinformation you know would dominate the airwaves.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Reuters) - U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders released details on Sunday evening about his "Medicare-for-all" universal healthcare funding plan and how he would pay for it.
The plan was released hours before Sanders was to square off in a Democratic presidential debate in Charleston, South Carolina, against Hillary Clinton, the former secretary of state and front-runner for the Democratic nomination, and former Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley.
Clinton's campaign had taken aim at Sanders in recent days, saying the U.S. senator from Vermont had not said how he plans to pay for his healthcare plan and that he needed to before the first party-nominating contest in Iowa on Feb. 1.
Sanders said that expanding Medicare, a government-run program that insures the elderly, would save $6 trillion over the next 10 years when compared with the current system, which was established by President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law, the 2010 Affordable Care Act.
Individuals would pay a 2.2 percent "premium" and employers would pay a 6.2 percent payroll tax to fund the healthcare plan. Individuals making $250,000 to $500,000 a year would pay a tax rate of 37 percent and those making more than $10 million would pay a 52 percent tax rate, according to details provided about the plan.

How about ending tax breaks for CEO bonuses instead?

To be delivered to The United States Senate
With a shrinking middle class and rising inequality, no corporation should get a tax break for shelling out giant bonuses to CEOs. We urge you to take action to close the performance pay loophole.

Instead of making deep cuts to the programs that build a stronger middle class, why doesn't Congress close this loophole that gives extra incentives for excessive CEO pay?

Centuries-Old English Law May Hold The Answer To Ted Cruz's Birth Issue:

In her Washington Post op-ed, McManamon quotes 18th century English jurist William Blackstone, who said natural born citizens are those born within the dominions of the crown of England, and aliens are those born outside of it.

But he’s not the only source for her argument.

“He just summarized it,” McManamon told TPM. “I went back as far as 1350 and read all the case law I could find on it, all the statutes I can find on it and in addition, I went and found all the records of naturalization for the two centuries before 1700.”

She pointed out that England is an island nation, and through it history, its citizenry was made up of a lot of merchants who settled abroad.

“They have kids, and those kids are not natural born citizens. But the Parliament passed a couple of statutes that would help them out a little bit,” she said -- statutes like one in 1350 that let foreign-born children at least inherit from their English-born parents, as at the time it was illegal for an alien to inherit from someone who was English.

“It doesn’t make them citizens, it just says, ‘Let’s let them inherit’,” she said.
She also looked at the statutes passed in response to the wars that rocked English history.

HOUSTON (AP) — The Canadian company that proposed the Keystone XL oil pipeline filed a lawsuit over the U.S. government’s rejection of the project and announced it plans to file a second legal challenge that will seek more than $15 billion in damages.
TransCanada filed a federal lawsuit Wednesday in Houston alleging President Barack Obama’s decision in November to kill the pipeline exceeded his power under the U.S. Constitution.

The company also announced the same day that it will submit a separate petition seeking the billions in damages, alleging the U.S. breached its obligations under the North American Free Trade Agreement.
