one of the top items of the Afl legislation day in Springfield, Il. yesterday. Some very tough leglislation on the matter before the Illinois leglislature on some of the hazards of the Honeywell lockout. Soar groups sent reps to the AFL meeting and did lobby some of the elected ones.

Liberals warn McCaskill, Democratic senators on entitlement cuts

Liberals warn McCaskill, Democratic senators on entitlement cuts

click link above:

from article:
"Conservatives in Congress aren't the only ones taking heat in the brewing fights over cutting Medicare and popular government programs.

A coalition of liberal groups is telling Democratic senators in Missouri and three other states who are up for re-election next year that signing on to such cuts would be perilous to their political futures.

The groups -- Progressive Change Campaign Committee, Democracy for America, MoveOn.org and Credo Action --commissioned polls suggesting strongly that cuts in key entitlements would be unwelcome with voters.

In Missouri, a poll conducted by PPP, a Democratic-aligned polling firm, showed that cuts in Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security would be especially unpopular.

The poll in Missouri of 1,050 likely voters found that 19 percent would support reducing Medicare expenditures while 77 percent opposed Medicare trims.

The survey question was phrased this way: In order to reduce the national debt, would you support or oppose cutting spending on Medicare, which is the government health insurance program for the elderly?

A similar question on Medicaid found that 32 percent would support cuts to reduce the national debt while 63 percent would oppose them. For Social Security, 17 percent would support cuts; 76 percent oppose them.

Stephanie Taylor, co-founder othe Progressive Change Campaign Committee, said in a statement: "Senator McCaskill should not support needless compromises on these issues and instead go on the offense by investing in jobs and making oil companies, Wall Street and the rich pay their fair share in taxes."

------------
note to Claire: if you wish to be a republican, switch parties. enough of the right wing bull.

You are going to be a hard sell if you do not immediately support medicare, medicaid and social security as it is or better. If not, better pass a good unemployment extention for you will need it

of course, should we adopt true universal healthcare such as HR676, this would drop drastically

from article:

"This has to be one of the funniest political stories of recent weeks: On Tuesday, 42 freshmen Republican members of Congress sent a letter urging President Obama to stop Democrats from engaging in “Mediscare” tactics — that is, to stop saying that the Republican budget plan released early last month, which would end Medicare as we know it, is a plan to end Medicare as we know it.

Now, you may recall that the people who signed that letter got their current jobs largely by engaging in “Mediscare” tactics of their own. And bear in mind that what Democrats are saying now is entirely true, while what Republicans were saying last year was completely false. Death panels!

Well, it’s time, said the signatories, to “wipe the slate clean.” How very convenient — and how very pathetic."

politics of redistricting

By STEVE KRASKE The Kansas City Star

' The thing I love about redistricting fights is that they strip all the bark off the trees.

The raw ambitions of every member of Congress are exposed for all the world to see. Winners and losers stand out clearly. Conclusions are easy to draw.

Which politicians fought for the common good? Who was just out for themselves?

Last week, the right honorables in Jefferson City overrode Gov. Jay Nixon’s veto of the proposed boundaries of the state’s eight congressional districts, finalizing a new map.

As I’ve written before, this process is the most brazen, bare-knuckled task in all of politics. Its chief goal in Missouri, and so many other states, is to draw a map that will allow incumbents to easily win re-election.

It’s a sham that results in more ideological members of Congress. Reform is desperately needed.

But I digress. Here’s what we learned, and it was a lot:

•Republicans win — again.

This is becoming a habit for the Missouri GOP. In a bid to fortify then congressman Dick Gephardt’s presidential ambitions 10 years ago, Democrats ceded a lot of turf, and Republicans profited.

This time around, Republicans controlled the process with their big majorities in both the House and Senate.

But that doesn’t diminish what they achieved here. They’ve basically taken a 50-50 state and flipped it into one for six Republican congressmen and just two Democrats.

Five Scary Things About The House Republican Budget You Haven't Heard. Today: Raising The Eligibility Age For Medicare. | The New Republic

CLICK LINK

thank you gop and teabaggers for my children and grandchildren. raising the age of medicare to 67 and reducing, that is one hell of a plan for the under 55ers.

-------
from article:

"By now, virtually everybody has heard about the Medicare voucher scheme that House Republicans want to implement starting in 2022. Instead of getting comprehensive, government-run insurance, seniors would have to enroll in private insurance, using a federal subsidy too skimpy to pay for adequate coverage. According to estimates from the Congressional Budget Office, seniors would become responsible for about two-thirds of their personal medical expenses. Many seniors would endure significant hardship as a result.

But that’s not the only Medicare change in the House Republican budget. Under current law, you become eligible for Medicare on the day you turn 65. If the Republicans get their way, you wouldn’t become eligible for the new Medicare voucher until the day you turn 67.

The change would happen gradually, with the eligibility age rising two months every year, starting in 2022. And, in the grand scheme of things, it's not like that many people are between the ages of 65 and 67 anyway. But think for a second about who those people are--and the insurance options they'd have available to them without Medicare.

Remember, the House Republican budget would also repeal the Affordable Care Act. That would leave insurance companies free to charge higher premiums, restrict benefits, or deny coverage altogether to individual applicants who have pre-existing conditions. Given the relatively high incidence of conditions like hypertension, arthritis, and vision problems among older Americans, it's safe to assume many seniors would have trouble finding affordable coverage--if, indeed, they could find coverage at all.
