Vintage tapes from the 1984/5 UK Miners' strike. This video compares the words with the actions of the US Chairman of the National Coal Board, Ian MacGregor. Also includes lots of facts and figures from the coal industry. Produced for the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) with financial help from groups and individuals from right across the social justice and trades union movement. It was recognised before the strike had even begun that mainstream press, newspapers, television and radio would be inherantly biased for the establishment and against the miners' struggle. Having said that there was an inherent contradiction in striking, that is closing pits, in order to keep them open. This fundamental problem smacked of lack of imagination by the NUM who, with hindsight, may have been better off occupying the pits to keep them working rather than going on strike. Anyway, hundreds of thousands of miners lost their jobs in this battle as one small part of a globalisation agenda hatched by Victor Rothschild and Margaret Thatcher which left British industry deccimated. Miners' Campaign Videotape Project 4 - Straight Speaking (1984) Trade Films, 26 Bottle Bank, Gateshead, Tyne & Wear, NE8 2AR. Tel. 0632 775532 The miners' strike of 1984/1985 was major industrial action affecting the British coal industry. It was a defining moment in British industrial relations, and its defeat significantly weakened the British trades union movement. It was also seen as a major political and ideological victory for Margaret Thatcher and the Conservative Party. The strike became a symbolic struggle, since the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) was one of the strongest in the country, viewed by many, including Conservatives in power, as having brought down the Heath government in its 1974 strike. The strike ended with the miners' defeat and the Thatcher government able to consolidate its free market programme. The political power of the NUM was broken permanently. The dispute exposed deep divisions in British society and caused considerable bitterness, especially in Northern England and in South Wales. Ten deaths resulted from events around the strike. Kiener Plaza

600 Market Street
St. Louis, MO 63101

Hosted by Cathy de la Aguilera

Description Join MORE, Missourians Organizing for Reform and Empowerment on this national day of action to make corporations pay their fair share!
Enough is enough! On Tax Day, April 18, as millions of Americans pay their taxes, we will call on corporations and millionaires to pay their fair share. At thousands of events from coast to coast, people will present tax bills to corporate tax dodgers for the billions of dollars their legions of lobbyists helped them avoid. Join MORE, Missourians Organizing for Reform and Empowerment, on this national day of action. We will present a tax bill to Bank of America and Peabody Coal.
We invite frustrated taxpayers, underwater homeowners, vilified public servants, job-hunting students, and unemployed veterans—everyone facing cuts or cutbacks, a pink slip or a shrinking paycheck—to join in.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - A hard-fought battle for compensation has paid off for more than a thousand Bethlehem Steel families.

Tuesday, Congressman Brian Higgins announced more than $135 million have been delivered to retirees or their families. The compensation stems from the Cold War era, when Bethlehem Steel workers may have been exposed to radioactive materials. Bethlehem Steel assisted in the government's atomic arsenal project.

First, growing inequality is the flip side of something else: shrinking opportunity. Whenever we diminish equality of opportunity, it means that we are not using some of our most valuable assets—our people—in the most productive way possible. Second, many of the distortions that lead to inequality—such as those associated with monopoly power and preferential tax treatment for special interests—undermine the efficiency of the economy. This new inequality goes on to create new distortions, undermining efficiency even further. To give just one example, far too many of our most talented young people, seeing the astronomical rewards, have gone into finance rather than into fields that would lead to a more productive and healthy economy.

Third, and perhaps most important, a modern economy requires “collective action”—it needs government to invest in infrastructure, education, and technology. The United States and the world have benefited greatly from government-sponsored research that led to the Internet, to advances in public health, and so on. But America has long suffered from an under-investment in infrastructure (look at the condition of our highways and bridges, our railroads and airports), in basic research, and in education at all levels. Further cutbacks in these areas lie ahead.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - "These people are not our friends," said Mike Louis, from International Association Machinists District 9, referring to the new crop of right-wing Republicans that now control the Missouri House and Senate. Louis was speaking here at the annual Missouri AFL-CIO Labor Legislative Conference March 28.

According to Herb Johnson, Missouri AFL-CIO secretary-treasurer, "We are faced with the big three: SB 1, so-called 'Right to Work'; SB 202, pay check deception; and HJR 6, so-called "Save Our Secret Ballots'."

SB 1 was the first piece of legislation introduced into the Missouri Senate this year. Republicans claim it will create a better business climate and create jobs.

However, according to Sam White, from the University of Missouri Labor Education Program, "'Right to Work' means a lot of different things to a lot of different people. But one thing is certain: 'Right to Work' does not increase earnings for working families. It does not create jobs."

The delusion of a classless America in which opportunity is equally distributed is the most effective deception perpetrated by the moneyed elite that controls all the key levers of power in what passes for our democracy. It is a myth blown away by Nobel Prize winner Joseph E. Stiglitz in the current issue of Vanity Fair. In an article titled “Of the 1%, by the 1%, for the 1%” Stiglitz states that the top thin layer of the superwealthy controls 40 percent of all wealth in what is now the most sharply class-divided of all developed nations: “Americans have been watching protests against repressive regimes that concentrate massive wealth in the hands of an elite few. Yet, in our own democracy, 1 percent of the people take nearly a quarter of the nation’s income—an inequality even the wealthy will come to regret.”

AN ACT

To amend chapter 1, RSMo, by adding thereto one new section relating to the federal health care reform law, with penalty provisions.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the state of Missouri, as follows:

Section A. Chapter 1, RSMo, is amended by adding thereto one new section, to be known as section 1.325, to read as follows:

1.325. 1. The general assembly finds and declares that:

(1) The people of the several states comprising the United States of America created the federal government to be their agent for certain enumerated purposes, and nothing more;

(2) The Tenth Amendment to the United States Constitution defines the total scope of federal power as being that which has been delegated by the people of the several states to the federal government, and all power not delegated to the federal government in the Constitution of the United States is reserved to the states respectively, or to the people themselves; and

(3) The assumption of power that the federal government has made by enacting the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act interferes with the right of the people of the state of Missouri to regulate health care as they see fit, contrary to James Madison's assurance in Federalist #45 that the "powers delegated" to the federal government are "few and defined", while those of the state are "numerous and indefinite".

2. The general assembly declares that the federal law known as the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, signed by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010, is not authorized by the Constitution of the United States and violates the true meaning and intent given by the Founders and Ratifiers, and is hereby declared to be invalid in this state, shall not be recognized by this state, is specifically rejected by this state, and shall be considered null and void and of no effect in this state.

3. It shall be the duty of the general assembly to adopt and enact any and all measures as may be necessary to prevent the enforcement of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act within the limits of this state.

4. Any official, agent, or employee of the United States government or any employee of a corporation providing services to the United States government that enforces or attempts to enforce an act, order, law, statute, rule, or regulation of the government of the United States in violation of this section is guilty of a class D felony.

5. Any public officer or employee of this state that enforces or attempts to enforce an act, order, law, statute, rule, or regulation of the government of the United States in violation of this section is guilty of a class A misdemeanor.

6. Any aggrieved party shall also have a private cause of action against any person violating the provisions of subsection 4 or 5 of this section.
