ST. LOUIS• Thousands of people waved U.S. flags and shouted "thank you" Saturday during a downtown parade to welcome home Iraq war veterans.

Many spectators wore layers of jackets and huddled under blankets on the cold, sunny day as they cheered on veterans of recent U.S. wars in the first parade of its kind in a major U.S. city.

WASHINGTON -- Former Sen. Jim Talent worries about what a Newt Gingrich-led ticket would mean for the GOP in November.

Sen. Roy Blunt thinks the recent Gingrich surge can help Mitt Romney become more forceful in defending his wealth and the free enterprise system that enabled it.

With another potential pivotal primary looming, this one in Florida on Tuesday, the two Missourians involved in Romney's campaign are hoping that the former Massachusetts governor's crisp debate performance on Thursday night bodes well for his prospects in the Republicans' shifting, chaotic primary season.

"I''m cautiously optimistic that evetually we'll get to 1,143 delegates," Talent said. "But I don't know how long it's going to to take. I honestly don't."

Talent is returning to Florida this weekend after spending Monday and Tuesday there on Romney's behalf, raising money and delivering Romney's messages on foreign policy.

NINETEEN Facts You Ought to Know Ahead of Tonight’s Speech

Tonight, President Obama will deliver his third State of the Union address. He will lay out a sweeping vision of what’s a stake for the middle class (more than ever) and two visions for the economy: an economy that works for everyone, not just a wealthy few or an economy where the game continues to be rigged for the rich and the middle class falls further behind.

ThinkProgress’ Judd Legum rounds up 19 essential facts you should know before tonight’s speech:

• Since the last SOTU, the economy has created 1.9 million private sector jobs. [Source]

• The top 1 percent take home 24 percent of the nation’s income, up from about 9 percent in 1976. [Source]

• Private sector job creation under Obama in 2011 was larger than seven out of the eight years Bush was president. [Source]

• The top 1 percent of Americans own 40 percent of our country’s wealth while the bottom 80 percent owns only 7 percent. [Source]

• Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, 2.5 million young adults gained health insurance. [Source]

• For every one job opening, there are four people looking for work. [Source]

• Last year, China spent 9 percent of its GDP on infrastructure. The U.S. spent 2.5 percent. [Source]

The group Make January 28th Welcome Home the Heroes from Iraq Day still has spots on floats and fire trucks for veterans interested in participating in its parade Saturday.

The parade will begin at Noon Saturday at Kiener Plaza in St. Louis and head west on Market Street to Union Station. It will feature more than 100 units including elaborate floats, fire trucks, military vehicles and marching bands from both Missouri and Illinois, said LaDonna Appelbaum, one of the organizers.

The sponsoring group began planning the parade about a month ago when the idea sprang up during chats between friends and families about how to honor men and women returning from the Iraq War.

ST. LOUIS • On his campaign website, Republican Dave Spence, the plastics guru running for governor, says he "earned a degree in Economics" from the University of Missouri.

That may be true — but it is not entirely accurate.

According to the university, Spence's degree is not in economics. It is in home economics.

The school says that Spence majored in family economics and management — also called consumer economics —which earned him a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Home Economics in 1981.

The university does offer a degree in economics, currently through the College of Arts and Science.

Spence said Monday that, while at Mizzou, his grades did not meet the threshold to enter the Business School. So he chose a different academic path that would allow him to graduate on time.

"I was not the greatest student in the world," Spence said. "I'll make fun of myself: I was a 60-watt bulb in a 100-watt society."

Mizzou's home economics program, which has been around for over a century, became its own college in 1973. In 1988, the name was changed to the College of Human Environmental Sciences.

ST. LOUIS • Months after he first discussed the goal of seeking the Republican nomination for governor, St. Louis businessman Dave Spence remains a virtual unknown to most party activists across Missouri.

As he travels around the state pressing his case, party leaders are meeting — most for the first time — a man who does not fit the standard template of a candidate for statewide office. About the closest he's come to an elected office is serving as the rush chair of his fraternity.

What party leaders do know about him is that he sold his plastics company in 2010 and is now wealthy enough to fund at least part of his own campaign. And, at the moment, he may represent the Republicans' best chance of unseating Gov. Jay Nixon.

Shortly after making his bid for governor official in November, Spence donated $2 million to his campaign, instantly giving him the largest war chest of any Missouri Republican running for state office.

"The boom, not the slump, is the right time for austerity at the Treasury." So declared John Maynard Keynes in 1937, even as FDR was about to prove him right by trying to balance the budget too soon, sending the U.S. economy — which had been steadily recovering up to that point — into a severe recession. Slashing government spending in a depressed economy depresses the economy further; austerity should wait until a strong recovery is well under way.

Unfortunately, in late 2010 and early 2011, politicians and policymakers in much of the Western world believed that they knew better, that we should focus on deficits, not jobs, even though our economies had barely begun to recover from the slump that followed the financial crisis. And by acting on that anti-Keynesian belief, they ended up proving Keynes right all over again.

In declaring Keynesian economics vindicated, I am, of course, at odds with conventional wisdom. In Washington, in particular, the failure of the Obama stimulus package to produce an employment boom is generally seen as having proved that government spending can't create jobs. But those of us who did the math realized, right from the beginning, that the Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (more than a third of which, by the way, took the relatively ineffective form of tax cuts) was much too small given the depth of the slump. And we also predicted the resulting political backlash.

Suppose that President Barack Obama were to say the following: "Mitt Romney believes that corporations are people, and he believes that only corporations and the wealthy should have any rights. He wants to reduce middle-class Americans to serfs, forced to accept whatever wages corporations choose to pay, no matter how low."

How would this statement be received? I believe, and hope, that it would be almost universally condemned, by liberals as well as conservatives. Romney did once say that corporations are people, but he didn't mean it literally; he supports policies that would be good for corporations and the wealthy and bad for the middle class, but that's a long way from saying that he wants to introduce feudalism.

But now consider what Romney actually said last week: "President Obama believes that government should create equal outcomes. In an entitlement society, everyone receives the same or similar rewards, regardless of education, effort and willingness to take risk. That which is earned by some is redistributed to the others."

And in an interview the same day, Romney declared that the president "is going to put free enterprise on trial."

Spend any time in Missouri's stately Capitol building and you're likely to find yourself on the third floor at some point, killing time between hearings or a House or Senate session, perusing the framed photos of former legislators on the wall.

The photos honor men and women sent to Jefferson City from their homes in St. Louis and Kansas City, Ava and Auxvasse, Bolivar and Bunceton, Chesterfield and Columbia to do the people's business.

For a time, they were special, king-makers walking marble halls, wined and dined by lobbyists looking out for their clients.

Now they're pictures on the wall.

The reality of legislative politics is this: Even the most seasoned lawmaker who stands before the photos and thinks real hard would have a difficult time identifying the accomplishments of most of the legislators whose pictures are on the wall, except for those who went on to higher office and made names as a governor or a member of Congress.

There's not much fame in being a state legislator. And that's too bad, because more than any other level of government, state legislatures deal with matters that affect citizens every day: taxes, roads, licenses for professionals from doctors to barbers, law enforcement, courts. The list goes on.

Lobbyists for special interests know this and pay close attention. But the average citizen is hard-pressed to name his current state representative or senator, much less the low-grade heroes on the wall.

In the introduction to "Inferno," a magisterial new history of World War II, the eminent British historian Max Hastings writes, "One of the most important truths about the war, as indeed about all human affairs, is that people can interpret what happens to them only in the context of their own circumstances."

This is a useful truth at all times, but particularly in the annual exercise of summing up the year just passed and anticipating the one ahead. Many people no doubt had a wonderful 2011 — a wedding, a birth, a new home, a promotion. Others may have lost someone close to them, been evicted or foreclosed upon or lost a job. They will not remember 2011 fondly.

In the long view of history, years don't matter much. Entire decades and even centuries get a paragraph or two. We found this about the decade 100 years ago: "America came of age. The Titanic was sunk and Americans marched off to war in Europe."
