ST. LOUIS• Thousands of people waved U.S. flags and shouted "thank you" Saturday during a downtown parade to welcome home Iraq war veterans.

Many spectators wore layers of jackets and huddled under blankets on the cold, sunny day as they cheered on veterans of recent U.S. wars in the first parade of its kind in a major U.S. city.

The group Make January 28th Welcome Home the Heroes from Iraq Day still has spots on floats and fire trucks for veterans interested in participating in its parade Saturday.

The parade will begin at Noon Saturday at Kiener Plaza in St. Louis and head west on Market Street to Union Station. It will feature more than 100 units including elaborate floats, fire trucks, military vehicles and marching bands from both Missouri and Illinois, said LaDonna Appelbaum, one of the organizers.

The sponsoring group began planning the parade about a month ago when the idea sprang up during chats between friends and families about how to honor men and women returning from the Iraq War.

Senate vote on the $250 to seniors

This is from the Alliance of Retired Americans:

$250 Payment to Social Security Recipients Voted Down By Senate
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) lost a bid on Wednesday to boost the income of millions of Social Security recipients and offset the elimination of the Social Security Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) for 2010. His amendment calling for $13 billion to fund a one-time, $250 payment to seniors, veterans, and the disabled needed 60 votes to pass, but failed 47-50. For a tally of the vote, go to http://bit.ly/bTH5iG. The amendment was to be attached to legislation that would extend jobless benefits and COBRA health care subsidies. There will be no COLA this year due to low inflation. Edward F. Coyle, Executive Director of the Alliance, said, "The purchasing needs of seniors are unique, and often include medications needed to stay alive. We insist that the Senate realize the importance of this $250 payment to struggling retirees." Sen. Sanders also said that the fight for the measure, which President Obama included in his budget, would continue.

----------------
Missouri: Senator Bond did not vote and Claire voted against the measure.

Illinois:
Burris (D-IL), Yea Durbin (D-IL), Yea

our folks might wish to thank those senators in Illinois (and we do). Missouri, one might wish to leave a short message and ask why they did not vote in one case and why a no vote. ------------------
-------------------------
Also, was this payment a sort of "bribe" during election time to shut up old folks? Election give-a-ways are pretty common.

Also, it is so nice that there is no inflation. Alas, seems my food bill, energy, cable and taxes all went up. Maybe they missed the memo.

Senator Blunt?

Yesterday I got a robo call from the Blunt vets for Senate folks. They say Blunt is pro vet.

Alas, his voting record is not pro.

One set of anti-vet voting and there are more:
-------------------------------
· Cut Veterans Health Care By $13.5 Billion: In 2005, Blunt voted to cut funding for veterans health care by $13.5 billion over five years. [HCR95, Vote 149, 4/28/05]

· Cast Deciding Vote to Defeat $53 Million Boost for Veterans Health Care & Benefits. In 2005, Blunt voted against an amendment to add $53 million for veterans health care and other benefits.[HR2528, Vote 224,5/26/05]

· Opposed Expanding TRICARE to Thousands of National Guard & Reserve Volunteers. In 2005, Blunt voted against a motion to expand access to the military’s TRICARE health insurance program, at the time open to only active duty service members, to thousands of reservist and National Guard members. A 2003 report by the General Accounting Office showed that 20 percent of all Reservists did not have health insurance, and 40 percent of Reservists aged 19 to 35 lacked health coverage.[HR1815, Vote 221,5/25/05]

· Opposed Job Assistance for Veterans Returning from Overseas. In 2005, Blunt voted against providing extra assistance to veterans who are returning from conflicts overseas. Four out of 10 members of the Guard and Reserve forces lose income when they leave their civilian jobs for active duty. [HR27, Vote 47,3/02/05]
---------------
some of this was part of the Delay midnight voting---late night congressional action designed to avoid C-Span television or press coverage.

We covered some of that at the meeting at the time. We also covered the fact that Mr. Blunt wishes to privatize social security and more.
-----------

A no vote this fall if he continues this path in my opinion.
